It's easy to get caught up in the scandal surrounding the author if you want and it really seems that there are those who have taken his transgressions as a very personal affront.
For his part, Lehrer addresses it all head on in an Author’s Note to open the book and then you are reminded of it with every meticulously annotated page.
But if you can set all that aside, what you are left with is a flat out good read. Lehrer is a talented writer and his gift is his ability to absorb dry and complex scientific studies then weave in some narrative flair in order to produce writing that is both thoughtful and compelling.

I was charmed by the very personal stake that the author has in this book. His own parental anecdotes give extra meaning to the research and literary references he makes. I wish so much that Mr. Lehrer had written this book when my own marriage and children were young (the turbulent 70's). Bravo for giving me valuable insight for loving attachment to my grandchildren.

I really liked this book. As a behavioral economist I have long noticed that we spend so little real research and study into the most important things: the relationship we have with our spouse and our children. On the contrary, there are thousands of volumes written about becoming more successful in our careers which in the end is less important. I really commend mr. Lehrer for writing this book. To me the most interesting things in it are fIrst that we need love to live well (attachment theory). Second, that love is hard and requires as much grit as anything. Love is not easy but is the most important that we do.

To me this book is by a man dealing with shame and as such it represents someone coming to terms with what they were and what they want to be. We all make mistakes but it is in acknowledgement of the mistakes that we really grow.. I feel like the author has begun to this with this book. I recommend it.

This is a beautiful and useful book. It's a summary of one of the most useful psychological ideas of the 20th century, which is attachment theory. It's hard to think of another scientific idea that has a bigger impact on our everyday life. Mr. Lehrer has written a book that deserves to be widely read.
